Hey, i only want to play games like

  • Counterstrike source
  • Battlefield 2
  • Oblivion
  • Rainbow Six
  • Doom 3

On high settings. How much do i need to spend and what gfx card you recomend?

Thanks, Ben.

8800gts 320mb would handle all of those on high (may be a little low fps in oblivion though).

what resolution do you play games at? And how much do you HAVE to spend in the first place?

Il be playing in 1680x1050 Resolution. Il have 2 20" monitors.

I have a dilemma you see. I could either:

Buy a 8800gts 320mb and buy a cheap 1.8ghz intel core 2 duo and overclock it
or
Buy a x1950 pro 512mb and a quad core Q6600.

So if i could play it on the x1950pro it would allow me to buy quad for my photo/video editing.

Can anyone please help me in my dilemma?

Bearing in mind i want to play the games in the first post should i...

As long as you're only playing games on a single monitor then the 1950pro will be more than enough.

1950 pro will be fine, how ever oblivion is killer and you need extreme set up to run that at full detail high res we talking major cash. it will run fine on the 1950 though but just remmeber you wont be able to max out he gfx. not many can

if thats rainbow 6 vegas then forget about the x1950

You'll struggle in R6 Vegas and Oblivion on max settings with an X1950Pro at that res, for Oblivion at that res an 8800GTS 640 would actually be the best.

Okay, so im willing to get rid of rainbow six and oblivion to get the cheaper card.

I will be playing the games on 1 monitor and the other monitor xifre/msn/skype?

Well i have a 8600GT and in the CSS video stress test i get 200fps average. I'm sure that would be enough for you? :P Oh and that's with everything on full, also for bf2 i run everything on high, no lag whatsoever, haven't used fraps with it so i can't give you the exact stat.

See, thats the two main games i want to play really.. CSS+BF2.

What about the 7600GT?

I'd still say to go with the X1950 pro. It's only £2 dearer than the 8600GT and faster.

Skip the 7 Series Nvidia for a start as the 8600GT and the X1950 have much better image quality and have the ability to do both HDR and AA at the same time but on the newest titles it wouldn't be the best for it. For BF2 and CSS I'd still get the x1950. If you can afford the extra £15 then I'd get the X1950Pro 512mb version.

I would say get the 8800 and the C2D clock it and u wont have any problems running any game about now at MOST res's.But thats just my point of view.

I would say get the X1950pro & quad core Q6600. Going by your stated requirements this will allow you to game well & do photo/video editing no problems.

at 1680x1050 the X1950Pro will start to struggle, sure it will be ok for CSS and BF2, but if what about future games? that card will struggle more than say a GTS.

It's only £70 though?. New graphics cards are coming and prices will fall. I'd say it's perfect for now. No point in getting any 8800 series now as the new ones are not that far off.
