Hi there,

Last things i remember doing were: installing Songbird v0.7, running CCleaner(with registry clean). I tried to play battlefield 2 project reality but that kept on crashing when loading maps. So I tried resetting, and that is when the problem occurred.

Just reset my main laptop and now it won't boot.

Tried to boot into Last Successful Boot mode and it can't, just resets.

Tried to boot into safe mode, stops at: "crcdisk.sys" and then BSODS and resets straight away.

Now i've put in the Vista DVD and booted into setup to try and repair the installation but it can't find the OS.

Point of Interest: When I click "Load Drivers" under System Recovery Options when I click "Repair my installation", I can see the D drive and go into and explore it and my files are intact, but I am unable to go into the C drive where my OS was installed...it just flat out refuses but there are no error messages. It does not show how much space is left either...

Is this fixable without doing a complete reinstall?

What happened in the first place?

Thanks.

EDIT - Update:

I have loaded a Live CD version on Ubuntu and tried to get onto the C:\ Drive partition but it gives me the following error: "Cannot Mount Volume - Unable to mount the volume 'Windows'".

I can get onto the D Drive partition fine and navigate through it, all the files seem to be there.

may be of no use but norton goback (or something like that) messes with the partition table so that it is not readable in a lot of situations (ie if you put the drive in another xp machine).. its usualyl obvious that its on there...

just an idea as you can see d and not c when you expect to but you can boot part way into windows..

the fix for me the few times i have seen it was to download a removal tool from their web site...

Don't use Norton.

I have an feeling that its something to do with the MBR as I remember reading about a similar problem and the solution was to fix the MBR.

The problem is, I don't know what the MBR is/does and I don't know how to fix it.

EDIT - Update:

By the way, in Linux, it says it can't mount the partition because the NTFS partition is marked as "in use"....or something along those lines"

Fixing the MBR didn't work.

Anyone got any ideas?

EDIT:

GParted says I should run Chkdisk - how do i do that without windows working?

New development.

Did a force mount in Ubuntu and I can now navigate and see all the files on the partition?

I really can't understand what is wrong here? - Any ideas?

Haven't managed to run Chkdsk yet as I have to download BartPE first which is a large download :/

I did some stuff -I'm not really sure what :s.

But I ran System Repair from the Vista disk and it did something and now it partially boots into windows. It gets further into windows than it did before but when I get into safe mode, all i see is the cursor and the hard drive activity light stops.

I think I am going to give up and do a reinstall. I am just annoyed I have to reinstall all my applications because it usually takes a day to do.
