Am I just looking back through rose tinted glasses ?? I remember playing these games for hours especially longbow etc.

How come theses never got an updated re release with shinny new combat maps and hi res aircraft ??

Or am I just being a sad old git ??? I have been away from main stream pc games for over 8 years :) and the only game I have really played since 2007 is EVE.

Sims just don't command any sort of significant market to make them very profitable these days it would appear, especially with all the extra work of making them look anywhere near modern standards. Also, factoring in the mass of negative so called sim fans who seem hell bent on ****ing off even the most dedicated producers I am constantly amazed by by the fact that we have any sims left in production at all.

I loved AH-64 Longbow. But I preferred WWII fighters and F15! My aunt actually works for Janes now and they still produce the printed material and still have quite a specialised market, but they have also have the niche material so it's worthwhile for them. I'm just looking at the Wiki. Brings back a LOT of great memories in pc gaming and simulation.

I suppose DCS has taken over the hardcore now, theres a lot of sims-lite coming out like world of warplanes and warthunder which seems to absorb a lot of the casuals. Guess the money just isnt in it these days.

They made a new Janes game...don't buy it.

First stop its not a sim, its a arcade game (think hawx). I don't mind a arcade flight game but its just abysmal.

I loved all the old Microprose sims they produced in the C64/Spectrum era with the cardboard keyboard overlays labling all the keys (Could use one of those for ARMA/DCS now) & DRM that intailed flicking through the printed manual to find a code printed on each page.
Then when I actually got a modern PC (likley as powerful as my current phone is now) European Air War was my goto sim right up until IL2 came along.
IL2 CLOD was a massive dissapointment for me & DCS seems a little too heavy going though I may get the DCS-P51 Mustang package as I think I could at least get that off the ground.

Lol this brings back memories

One of the first games I bought for my Voodoo II card back in late '98 or early '99.

Janes World War II Fighters:

Nice BIG cardboard box and proper printed manuals...remember them:D
