What happened to my steering?

It's been one of those car days.

Firstly, 5 minutes into my normal journey to work, the Z4M decided to malfunction. I'm still not sure now of the cause so if anyone has any input I'd greatly appreciate it, particularly as it's the most disconcerting issue I've faced in my 10 years of driving.

Essentially the car appeared to reboot, while driving. The dashboard looked similar to when I start the car, this in itself wouldn't have bothered me greatly. What did take me by surprise was that my power steering went too, either that or the steering lock engaged. Fortunately I was doing 20mph in a small village and someone's empty driveway offered a run-off area. Years of problem solving told me to turn it off and on again and sure enough everything came back fine. I regret this now as it's limited my ability to properly evaluate what went wrong. I have no idea if the throttle still worked, if the steering truly did lock out or exactly what lights were on (although fairly sure it was the emissions and stability control). Don't ask me why I carried on with my journey, but I made it to work safely and did some digging on-line.

I couldn't find anything directly related to my issue for this model. But the only electrical hiccup I've had is occasionally the clock/mpg/avg spd. would reset and the dials wouldn't immediately spring into life. I was fairly sure the battery had never been replaced, which gave it 6-7 years of use. Considering the time of year and the demands I put on the car in the morning with heated everything on, the battery is my only logical direction at this time. I've ordered a new one and a voltmeter to check the old one.

I then had to decide whether to drive it home or leave it at work, but considering the battery was being delivered to my home address I knew what I wanted to do. To avoid driving in the dark/school time I left the office at midday after doing laps of the car park.

Obviously I'd made bad karma choices because a mile from my house a skip lorry decided to mount the verge and then corrected massively, launching stones at me just as I was passing. Cue quite a few scuffs on the driver side front bodywork and a wonderful chip with cracks in my windscreen. New one of those comes on Sunday.

TLDR
Drove to work. Car threw me some errors. Steering stopped working while driving. Might be battery related. New battery coming tomorrow. Drove home early. Got hit by hail of stones from skip lorry. New windscreen coming Sunday.

If it is any help, my Focus ST did this once. I was at a level crossing so turned the ignition off. When putting it back on, it went a bit haywire and the power steering had gone. I drove it (pretty difficult without power steering) for a bit until I could find a place top pull in. Restarted car, all fine. A few weeks later the car wouldn't start at ALL and the battery was completely dead. New battery fitted and I never had any problems since whilst I owned it.

Sounds similar to what you experienced. It was almost like the car didn't have enough juice to fire up all its systems (including the power steering).

I'd be straight off to the nearest garage to get some diagnostics kit plugged in. You were lucky at 20 mph in a village, what would have happened on a motorway?

Check the tightness of your battery terminals.

Had a similar strange cut out before, upon checking the negative terminal, it was a tad loose.

Cheers guys, I'll check all of these tomorrow. I've got a kit from my old Z4 so I'll plug that in and see if it throws me any errors.

That does help. I'm hoping for the same solution.

Trust me, I have tormented myself appropriately about the consequences of driving something that I can't guarantee won't fail.
