What happened to quality control?

About 6 months ago I bought a HDD, which I had to take back as it got stupidly hot.

My DVDRW (which I've had for a year or 2) now doesn't want to read any DVDs, yet it still burns blank discs.

The other week I got an 8800GTX, which again I took back as it locked up within minutes of starting any game.

Now my motherboard, which has been running fine for the past few months, as of yesterday looks to be dead.

All that's fairly new stuff, yet I have an old P3 system which I've never had any problems with.

Is it just me, or has anyone else had this much stuff failing lately?

Are you overclocking?

Will have nothing to do with it at all. Unless of course he has failed to lock his PCI and PCI-E clocks.

Sounds like bad luck to me. Only ever had one component fail and that was a Maxtor HDD.

My hdd's are too hot to touch, thats the temp they are meant to be though.

If the GTX locks up in games it sounds like you didn't plug it into the PSU or the PSU isn't very good.

I once had a DVD drive actually explode whilst inside the case ( don't ask ) count yourself lucky.

What are your hard drives? Mine (7200.10 at the moment) are barely lukewarm and in general the cooler the better for hard drives.

I don't think that components are any worse now than they used to be although they are now more complex and that will, of itself, potentially lead to more problems due to that fact. :)

Dual 250GB Western Digital Caviar SE16 SATA II 16MBcache in Stripe raid :)

Wish i had got 7200.10 but I bought this pc when i didn't have a clue what i was doing heh.

I certainly had endless problems with my Apple II E back in the day, but the Sinclair ZX80 ran with no problems at all.

I think that there is a danger of getting too much of a "rosy glow" about things being better in the past. On the whole as far as technology was concerned they weren't.

Sure, today's kit is hugely more complex that that of even 5 years ago, but 5 years ago the top line stuff was cutting edge and just as prone to falling over.

Nostagia isn't what it used to be!

Hmm...don't fully agree there, I must admit most of the issues I had in the 486 era where more poor build related, flimsy casing and things like that. Whereas today certainly hard disk reliability is questionable, I wouldn't want to remind everyone how bought IBM Deadstars a while back ;)

HDD are generally supposed to be around 40 aren't they? Anyway, that was a while ago and I got a new one. Which is nowhere near as hot.

The GTX was faulty, they confirmed it at the shop and gave me a replacement. Which I've not had any problems with.

Haha. Nothing beats explaining your own jokes...

Yeah I had to do that, otherwise people might have thought I was actually surprised that a maxtor died, so I wanted to make it clear that Maxtor suck :) You would have to be mad to buy one of those, the amount of them I've seen die over the past few years is really bad! Seagate of Samsung for me, although WD are cool, never had one though :)

Think mine sits around 24c... not looked for a while.

EDIT: Sits around 31c really, I made the above up obviously :)

It's Maxtor, I don't think anyone would have got the wrong end of the stick. :p
