Ok, so at the moment, I am just using 2x2GB patriot viper sector 5, 1333MHz 9-9-9-24. If I add some Corsair Vengeance racing red, 1600MHz at 8-8-8-24, would the speed downclock to 1333MHz?

Yes it will, really you should try and keep to the same ram if you can, maybe sell your older stuff and buy twice as much new ;)

I'll probably end up getting the corsair 8GB, and wait till ram plummets up in price again, until like 4GB is more than £60-£80 to sell my current patriot stuff!

both sets will run at 1333mhz because that is the base speed. It would however be possible to overclock both sets up to 1600mhz in bios.

It may be possible.

It depends on the overclockability of the 1333MHz RAM.

1600MHz would be a 20% overclock which is a fair stretch.
