What happens when I request a phone to be unlocked?

Hi,

I recently got contacted by someone who bought an old phone of mine - one that was either lost or stolen 2 years ago or more. (there was an unfortunate period where I went through 4 phones in 2 years).

He contacted me and said that he has bought it but obviously got ripped off because it is blocked.
He offered to send it back to me from Germany but also asked if he could purchase it. (paypal transfer and I unblock it)

What I'm asking, is if I contact my service provider and request it to be unbarred, will that affect my current, working phone's IMEI status?

I will make sure I erase the phone on icloud, but are there any other things I need to be concerned about?

Thanks,

For all the potential hassle I'd just say "sorry mate, nothing to do with me"

Next week a phone linked to you will be involved in a terrorist plot :p

Yes, I have phone insurance with my bank, and pay a £100 premium when I need to use it.

I have received a new phone. I'm not sure which exact phone this was but it had to have been at least 2 years ago.

In hindsight, it's a funny story:
If it is the phone I think it is, it was stolen from me, out of my hand, while unlocked, by two british men in Finsbury Park.
Thankfully they weren't masterminds, as the worst they did was say stupid things to my tinder matches :) - somewhere in Haggerston.
Then I guess they sold it to one of the phone shops in Dalston, as it came online there.
Then an old Turkish guy, who possibly owns an off-license in Green Lanes, bought it - I saw where it came online and several photos of him and his shop pop up in my icloud :)
Then I guess maybe he gave it to his family or sold it in Turkey, as a year or so later, last September. I started getting whatsapp messages from someone in Istanbul, I ignored them. They probably returned it, as then 3 weeks after, the same messages from a different person in Istanbul, again I ignored them.
Now 6 months after, some Turkish guy who said he's in Germany has it - he bought it for his girlfriend :)

Anyway.
He's offered to send it back, but it would cost him postage and actually wants to buy it from me.
I know some here may say this is fraud, or against the law - but, I've done nothing wrong, and I think it is a stupid waste to leave such an expensive fully working phone as a bricked piece of junk for no one to use.

Who actually owns this phone now anyway?
Apart from the *** please fully star swearing in future, especially this word *** who stole it, it's pretty much left a 2 year trail of people getting ripped off and then trying to make their money back off someone else.
I can end this :)

Cheers,

Ring your mobile company/insurance company and just ask? their answer will depend on what you can tell him. I know in the past if I have lost a phone and then found it again, the IMEI has been barred and they have just told me they can't unblock it so just recycle it.

Out of interest,
How has it been passed round for two years and people are still contacting you, photos have appeared in your iCloud and so forth.

If someone stole my phone, I don't think I could move quick enough to erase it.
