What hardware do I keep?

I'm looking to sell a few of my AMD parts (considering memory, graphics card, motherboard and CPU) and get a conroe setup as this is doing my head in.

Its perfect running at standard speeds, I honestly get no problems whatsoever...

But when I overclock it, it just seems to have a life of its own.

Recently I upgraded the heatsink on the CPU to a Zalman 9500 model, fantastic cooler, managed to knock nearly 20C off of the temp under a full load compared to the standard retail cooler. I was very impressed.

I have managed to overclock the AMD 4600+ CPU further and its stable. Works perfectly, until I turn it off and then try to turn it on in the morning, it refuses to post. No matter what I can think of doing (insert key etc) it just wont boot.

I have to reset the bios completely before it turns back on. It then boots up, perfectly. I have to change all the bios settings to what I want them to and overclock again... I find this unacceptable and its doing my head in!! Its fine standard, but I dont want to run it standard ;)

So, here's the list of hardware I was thinking of selling:-

AMD AM2 4600+ CPU
Abit KN9 Ultra motherboard
Geil 2Gb PC6400 800Mhz
HIS X1900 XT

I'm looking for an Intel Conroe setup with the E6600 CPU but I'm unsure what motherboard to get with it. I hear a lot about the Gigabyte boards, but I've never owned one... yet...

Can anyone please help me? I apologise for the length of this post, I hope it doesnt put people off replying.

Many thanks and Happy Christmas :)

no point in getting rid of that ram tbh, thats fine. The card is still very good, only thing you might need is a new mobo and proccessor.

^^ What he said.

Core2Duo will suit you very nicely :)
e6600 and a gigabyte DS3. That ram works great with this board (iirc, don't take my word for it)

What power supply are you using? That will be important with the next rig as well as possibly contributing to your current problems.

yup... the PSU is an important component if u overclock..

I have a OC Z 520W Mod Stream and a OC Z 520W Power Stream PSU.. (Perhaps I can use them both?! :))

Here's a list of hardware I'm thinking of replacing it with...

Abit AW9D-MAX Intel 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £132 - Apparently its the best one??

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail - £215

Now I was thinking of changing the memory as well, I was looking into something like this (in fact anything from this page really : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=8&subid=817 - Main reason 1:1 timings more than anything)

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-8500 1066MHz SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel DDR2 £294 or

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC8500 1066MHz+ Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit £353

Any thoughts please?? (If I upgrade later, maybe I can change the ram then...)

So just board and CPU replacements then...

Are my choices any good and would they work with the Geil ram I have ok?

Personally i would get the DS3 and 6300!! Then overclock it. Very nice setup after that! Save yourself £140 too. Which is always nice!

I have e6600, abit aw9d mobo and the geil ram you have now. Works great. That particular combination is also found on some ready built pc's on Overclockers store too.

one question, why did you go am2 in the first place

I wish I knew to be honest... I've had no end of problems with the setup, spent £60 sending it back to Overclockers just to try and get the problem solved.. so far, still no further forward to be honest..

Countless bios updates, software and I still cant get a stable ish system...
