I have recently moved out of a cable area and just sold my linksys router but it was faultless and very easy to use and setup, no dropouts and mega reliable

Linksys WRT54GS-UK Wireless-G SpeedBooster Broadband Router/4-Port Switch
hope that helps :)

a wireless pci card for your upstairs and just hardwire your main rig, but make sure you dont have mega thick walls (ie live in a really old house) or you will not get a decent signal from your router.

I have the linksys pci card and as with the router has been really good after getting the latest drivers

Linksys WMP54GS Wireless-G PCI Adapter with SpeedBooster :)
