What Hardware & Sofware To Setup Web Server At Home ?
Hi,
I am thinking about setting up a web server at home to host one or two web sites but am at a loss where to start.
I have a spare PC (Quad Core 2.6GHz / 8mb RAM), the options of Linux or Windows 7 (Pro or Ultimate) or Windows 8 Server (any variant) and have BT Infinity as ISP with upload speed of around 16mb.
Would the stuff I have be suitable, or, would I be beter advised to upgrade the hardware/software. I am OK with allocating a budget to purchasing some kit and software if needed as long as I know where to start.
Also, would a Linux web server be simpler to configure and maintain than a Windows based web server, I have a few spare HDD's so have options to try out both server OS types.
Lastly, on the assumption that I have reserved a couple of domain names via a hosting company, can I use these on a web server from my home instead of having to pay for hosting with the company that I used to reserve the domain names?
Any advice most appreciated.
