i thought BMW with their model designations were taking the pee, slightly but Audi has gone one off in a completely different direction.

I had to look it up after seeing an A3 30 or was it 35

  • 25 – 80kW (107bhp) and below
  • 30 – 81-96kW (109-129bhp)
  • 35 – 110-120kW (148-161bhp)
  • 40 – 125-150kW (168-201bhp)
  • 45 – 169-185kW (227-248bhp)
  • 50 – 210-230kW (282-308bhp)
  • 55 – 245-275kW (329-369bhp)
Copied from CarMagazine, it still makes no sense?

Apparently it’s because they’re looking to introduce hybrids and electric cars to each of the lines, so this is meant to be ‘fuel-agnostic’.

I dislike it.

Drove past an A3 30 earlier and was thinking what the heck is going on and whether I had missed some random edition!

To find it was a 109-129bhp A3 is painful :D

Did wonder how powerful the a8 50 tdi is I keep seeing.

No different to either of the other German brands really. The model numbers haven't reflected the engine size for ages.

Couple of examples

A45 2 litre Turbo
330i 2litre Turbo

Go back to older mercs c200 could have been 2l or 1.8 supercharged...

It's simple, you find which number you match, then you know which ones not to race at the lights.

So my car being 180kw would be a '45' if it was an Audi, so that means I should be safe against anything with a 40 or lower, regardless of model.

Easy ;)

The cars look much better with just the model name on anyway. They probably still badge them up like ‘A3 30 TFSI’..

first time i saw an A1 30 i got excited and thought i'd missed a new beasty audi :( . dissapointed

Not something I'd noticed, but it sounds like they're copying Mercedes and BMW.

What car do you drive?

"It's an Audi A330" or "its an Audi A55"

Makes me wonder if it is some attempt to break into the BMW/Mercedes market.

It's just to provide some differentiation between engine specs, so people know if you bought the slow 2.0TDI or the not quite as slow 2.0TDI.

The BMW M140 doesn't have a 4ltr engine.....in fact, it doesn't have four anything...wait..wheels, yep it's got 4 of those

Maybe the Audi A3 30 has 30 of something?

At least the theory with the BMW one is that it's the equivalent performance of the old 3 litre.

'Just got my new M140i'

'Cooo, I have an A3 40TSI'

:D

It's not new, Audi have been doing this in the East Asian market for some time now. If you don't like it new cars can be debadged for free when ordered...

Go back to 1989 when a 316i was a 1.6, 318i 1.8, 320i 2.0, 325i 2.5, 535i 3.5, 840i 4.0 etc...

I thought the new Audi naming system was to show how many thousands your car should have been if you'd paid for it with cash instead of on PCP, that way it's easier to see how well your neighbours are doing.
