What has happened to Web browsers?

I used Netscape, thought it was great.

I then used Internet Explorer for a LONG time.

It did the job.

I then switched to Firefox, found it useful then tried Chrome and loved it. Fast, efficient and did everything I wanted.

Over time, Chrome has become a MESS. Google too busy now believing they own the internet and their own **** does not stink.

Microsoft release Edge... ***, seriously?

Firefox have successfully completed their metamorphosis into Chrome.

Are there any other options or literally pick from a bad bunch and pick the one which sucks for you the least?

/rant over.

Tried Opera? Waterfox?

:edit: not meaning to be short. I do agree, browsers have a habit of going through peaks and troughs when it comes to both speed and stability. I can only assume, like any software, development and updates add functionality or security but almost always sacrifice something else. Most applications we use don't need to be updated that often however browsers by their nature are under particularly heavy use and are a particularly high risk when it comes to security, so not only are updates required more frequently, you notice them more too as it's an application you're almost constantly running.

New one called vivaldi, tried it briefly looked ok. I went back to Firefox about a year ago as chrome became the new IE. As you say they all have their bad points, not yet tried Edge but seeing hardly any positive comments means I wont be in a hurry.

Some of the deepest darkest Microsoft websites don't even render properly with Edge, which is a big no.

Firefox is bloated beyond defense

IE is IE and rubbish in so many ways. My employer's internal sites want IE 7 to work properly and even compatibility mode is hit/miss (this is a tech company)

Opera is the ginger kid no one likes

Chrome has serious security flaws by design because Google

The only valid option is Chromium

Mostly in jest

wait a month (whenw10 anniversary update comes out) and try edge again.
new version I like.

but ultimately you have to move around, as they all seem to get stale, lose their way. then come back a few years latter.

Haven't changed from Firefox since I first started using it.

Well bar my work pc which has chrome which isn't too bad but not my pref.

The main factor for me is syncing across to Android, which only leaves Firefox, Chrome and Opera, and I found Chrome to be the most reliable. Firefox for Android is also sluggish on heavy sites, and I found HTML5 video playback not as smooth as Chrome.

Firefox seems to be refocusing themselves and the next release is finally introducing electrolysis, and that should help with performance/stability by a fair bit.

Hoping Edge will be a lot more improved with upcoming W10 update as well.

My browsing experience is faster than it has ever been. I've been a Chrome 32bit stable user since 2009.

- All plug-ins blocked.
- Google DNS.
- A handful of extensions, including Adblock Plus with friendly websites white listed.

Interesting thread. Gimpymoo's language is pretty funny.

You can try using Safari. I had only one problem with Safari. I don't know why but it can't stand Facebook. That is why gave up using it and stick to one that sucks for me least ;)

Improving the browsing experience .......

Added 'Google Redirects Fixer' add-on to firefox(well waterfox 42) last week, this strips google results tracking url's and takes you directly to the web page when you click - no more pregnant pause waiting for google server farm.

... other than that my waterfox add-ons noscript/session-manager/vertical tabs remain same over four years

I've recently started using Avast SafeZone Browser and it seems to work really well, quick to load, doesn't seem bloated and deals with annoying ads very well.
