With a 380W Tagan PSU (out of stock at the moment) it totals about £275. £25 over budget but I couldn't drop anything and still keep it a 939/PCi-E system. If you aren't going to be playing games then you could drop the X800 and go for more basic graphics card.

I think this is about the minimum you can spend to get a decent(ish) improvement over your existing system.

For a full ATX motherboard add on at least £10 or so and I'd suggest an Nforce4 based chipset as they are solid, stable and well proven. I don't think that you lose anything by going mATX beyond a couple of PCI slots though.

How about the asrock dual sata around £50 and it's got a PCI-e slot and an AGP slot so you can stick with your current GFX card, and spend your budget on the following

CA-004-SK FSP Sparkle FSP400-60 Blue Storm 400W ATX2.0 PSU (CA-004-SK)
£39.95 £39.95
Asrock Dual Sata - £52 inc
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 90nm (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA3700BNBOX) (CP-121-AM) £152.69 Including VAT

Don't know if PSU price includes VAT as that was a copy and paste :p
But that brings you in or around £250 with a very good system, then you can upgrade the GFX at a later date.

Yep that is a good idea if his AGP graphics card is working.
PSU is £46.94 inc VAT.

But total is still arround £250 for a very good rig, when he gets some cash together for a PCIE graphics card.
