What have I done??

So I'm trying to establish what RAM I have in my PC, because the people from whom I bought it apparently couldn't tell me...

So I opened the case, and with the power off, I peeked around inside, unplugged one stick of RAM, read a few codes off of it, hoping I could google one and it would be the model number or something.

Then I put it back in, exactly how it came out, clipped it in, put the case back on, and fired her up, and I get noise, fans, lights etc in the case, but my screen stays blank, and my mouse and keyboard lights don't come on...

Please can anyone tell me what I did, and how I fix it??

Thanks for any help!

The 1st thing i would do is re open the case and make sure the RAM is seated properly. If that does not work, try with that stick of RAM out and see if it boots

CPU-Z might help identify your ram?

Remove the stick again and try rebooting. If it works try putting the stick back in again in the appropriate paired slot (assuming you have 2 identical ram sticks).

I have 4 slots, each with some kind of Samsung DDR800 Ram in. It's a ASRock K10N78 Mobo if that helps at all. I'll try that and see. Hope it works! I'm scared I've killed it :(

RAM if seated in a different slot believe it or not can cause the symptons you describe. Are you sure you put it in the same slot as you found?

My advice is to pull all the ram out and put one ram stick in it. Try each slot until your PC gets a heartbeat, then work from there.

If that does not work, then perhaps reset the Cmos, via either a clear CMOS button on the motherboard or jumpers.

I would also recommend getting the manual for the moherboard from the support website. I find motherboard manuals can be a lifesaver in such instances.

Cheers

I tried this, and my PC is working as normal again, but obviously the RAM I removed is still outside of my PC...

Would this mean anything? ie, that stick is now broken?

I only removed the one stick, so I couldn't have put it in the incorrect slot.

Any other recommendations? or am I permanently down to 6GB until I get some more?

try putting it back in? make sure its seated correctly are the contacts clean looking? blow in the ram slot (dont spit)
maybe rub the contacts gently with a clean looking eraser
