After some playing today I've found the fan to be working fine...which does worry me a bit as to what the noise I could hear was. :/

Oh I highly doubt it, but to be honest, it doesn't really matter. I'll be replacing loads of parts anyway.

Of course, if you wanted the best E36 you could get this side of an M3, then a facelift 328 is going to be the answer, but in terms of value, the 325 is the only car to have if the iS is going for in excess of £1500.

325i is upwards of £1500, 328i is upwards of £2k.

There are hardly any on there, and there are just as many under £1k as there are over (if you exclude verts).
Go check your local paper, if there are any 325s, you'll find they'll likely be under £1k. There are a few locally. There won't be many advertised on the internet as most people won't bother advertising a sub £1k car on the internet.

Actually it's the other way around, most sub £1k cars are on ebay, autotrader, some are advertised locally but only in the sense of an ad in the car window. People round here don't dive BMWs, they drive Peugeots, so all that is in the local papers are stupidly expensive 106s, 206s etc.
The only sub £1000 e36s are usually duff ones. You saw the thread about the 4.8k e36 328i right? Case-in-point.

The car in the OP is 12 years old. The 325i's are between 15 and 20 years old. There is quite a bit of difference. Secondly, one is a facelift car with the full Sport bodykit and seats as standard, the older 325i's have none of this and are prefacelift.
