Just taken my first step into the world of home audio.

I've just ordered myself a new Onkyo HT-S5305B 3D Ready 5.1 AV Receiver and Speaker Package for £279.

I was tempted by an all-in-one Blu-ray system but went for the above instead as I have an X-Box, Sky HD and a WD HDTV box to plug into it. I can add a Blu-ray sometime in the future.

Just hoping I've done the right thing (fingers crossed) although it should go nicely with the 46in LCD TV.

Definitely the HT-S5305B.

Here is the description cut and pasted from the retailers website. Hopefully a bargain at £279.

According to the rainforest retailers website the colour is black. I'll let you know when it arrives.

the S3305 has the HT-R380
the S5305 has the HT-R538

It was a cracking deal, wish I'd got it before they ran out of stock :(

Well got mine setup tonight as a 3:1 setup (need to hide wires under carpet for rears to avoid cats eating them).

Quite pleased with it. My only complaint is that our corner tv unit isn't really big enough to accommodate a 42" tv and 3 front speakers so looks a bit cramped which he gf is not happy about at all - so need to sort something!

Ah ok you have bought it in silver?

S3305 would appear to be the black variant as I have it seems?! The receiver itself is the R380 and R580 in both I believe.

Nope, it's just that the 3305 has a passive sub, the 5305 has a powered sub.

I've had the 3305 for a few months now after my Samsung all-in-one system stopped working. The difference is staggering, it's a much, much better bit of kit and was definitely worth paying the little bit extra for over another Samsung. LG, Sony etc.

Ah ok wasn't aware of the difference between the two :)

I'm not loving the aesthetics of the setup though, think I just need time to adjust to seeing my corner tv unit full of gear!

My delivery was scheduled for yesterday but due to the snow it didn't arrive and I'm pretty sure it won't turn up today either :(

Let us know what its like once set up, Im after something like this to replace my dvd player hifi type thing lol.

Just bought a S5305 for £279.99 from the rainforest website, but they aren't getting any in stock until the 9th :(

Surprisingly, but pleasingly, it turned up this morning in a nice big, heavy box.

After opening it up and unpacking all the component parts, I had to leave them to warm up as they'd obviously been left in the back of the lorry for the last few days and I was concerned about condensation. I can confirm though that the unit is black.

As someone who is taking their first steps into the home cinema audio world I have to admit I'm totally blown away by the quality of the sound coming out. I had to sit through the film "Monster House" with my daughter and the sound quality was awesome (although I did fall asleep).

There are a mountain of settings to go through and try to understand but using "out of the box" settings I am very impressed so far. I have my x-box 360, Sky HD and a WD HDTV media player connected by HDMI cable and the wii will be connected via component (tried it once but couldn't get it to work). About the only complaint I have so far is that the rear speaker cable wasn't long enough (had to acquire some).

Currently watching X-factor and the crispness of the sound is so much better that the LCD TV speakers (no shock there though).

First impressions summary then - Awesome piece of equipment.

Interested in getting this or something like it, but have a couple of questions:

How would I plug my SCART VM cable box into it?

How does the wiring in general work? HDMI from X360/Bluray player both into this, then a single HDMI from this into TV??
