Uhh sensible advice would be any poetry you make the effort to write yourself will probably be well recieved no matter how bad!

Google John Donne if you want some cool old poems to put in a card, the Flea is a good one if I remember right...

MARK but this flea, and mark in this,
How little that which thou deniest me is ;
It suck'd me first, and now sucks thee,
And in this flea our two bloods mingled be.
Thou know'st that this cannot be said
A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead ;
Yet this enjoys before it woo,
And pamper'd swells with one blood made of two ;
And this, alas ! is more than we would do.

O stay, three lives in one flea spare,
Where we almost, yea, more than married are.
This flea is you and I, and this
Our marriage bed, and marriage temple is.
Though parents grudge, and you, we're met,
And cloister'd in these living walls of jet.
Though use make you apt to kill me,
Let not to that self-murder added be,
And sacrilege, three sins in killing three.

Cruel and sudden, hast thou since
Purpled thy nail in blood of innocence?
Wherein could this flea guilty be,
Except in that drop which it suck'd from thee?
Yet thou triumph'st, and say'st that thou
Find'st not thyself nor me the weaker now.
'Tis true ; then learn how false fears be ;
Just so much honour, when thou yield'st to me,
Will waste, as this flea's death took life from thee.

I would try and write something myself, but the good lady wife would probably end up finding I had shared my love with an internet forum before her... and could end in tears ;o)

[edit] http://www.luminarium.org/sevenlit/donne/donnebib.htm lists a lot of Donnes poems if you are after inspiration.

Not a joke thread, please use the other thread for those thanks ;)

I wouldnt copy a poem word for word if thats what I end up writng on the card, I would change it to suit and add my own bits. My minds just drawing a blank at the moment and im quickly running out of time :eek:

Something soppy, "To a princess as stunning as the light from a new dawn, your hero". Yeah I know, goes back to a time when I helped out with her ex who was being a bit of a *******, she called me her hero, it kind of stuck.

Hmm, im not sure Donne is impression hes trying to create ;)

Well Donne maybe not but if you want a rythm etc thats not a bad place to get inspiration. I love the humour and metaphor taken from a completely random idea. You have to wonder if Donne smoked something to watch a flea take a lump out of him and think 'Yeah Flea share the Love... wow thats an idea for a poem!'

What I normally do is brainstorm my feelings and the situation we are in, see if I can find some phrases that sound right. Then use those initial ideas to create a poem.
