What I had problems with building my first comp

1 of the main problems I had was deciding where the hell the cables for the power switch and the usb and and all the other stuff go into because they plug into those little pins on the mobo and had to keep testing them all out till I got everything working, is there an easy way to understand which pins they plug into?
Like I have every up and running right now but my HD LED is not working because that cable must be in the wrong pin?
Not a big issue, but would like to know how you find out which pins all of them go into.

Motherboard manual maybe?

There will be a diagram in the manual that came with the motherboard.

I would NEVER suggest a "trial and error" method of connecting up the case connection plugs to the header on the mobo. Plus, you'll never work out the polarity.

Yup

The manual will show connections for front panel header including orientation ie. which one is + (ground)
