What I THINK is a HDD problem!

look, i'm stressed. basically, i bought a new 500W PSU today for my broken PC as i was under the impression it was the cause for the PC being broken in the first case.

anyway, everything's plugged in. everything's set up. i turn the switch on at the back of the PSU and yes, the fan works. the CPU fan is going. the GPU fan is going. the DVD-ROM drives open and close. the lights on the front of the PC are on (solidly) and all that's missing IS THE BEEP.

i presume this is hdd related? both of my hard drives are powered, and connected to the mobo with sata cables. there's just nothing from them. at all. :/

any ideas lads and lasses?

Does it display a picture? it should get to the POST screen without a HDD attached, if it cant do this then you have other issues.

hmm, nah, it's just seems like everything's working except the HDDs. guess i haven't checked the RAM?

how would i go about doing that? :D

remove the pc from the mains supply, pop out the battery on the motherboard, wait a minute or two, stick back in and re-attach the pc back to the mains.

Now when you boot up, it will stall at the post screen complaining about "defaults loaded" just enter the bios and.

set date and time.

Boot order.

check configurations of ant onboard stuff(audio/usb etc)

save and exit the bios.

Don't you also have to fiddle with a jumper on the mobo, or has this been done away with on new kit?

Doesnt matter if you pull the battery out, does the same thing, its just quicker this instead of asking him his motherboard model, then finding out where this jumper is etc etc.

sigh, nothing happens and now the heatsink fan stops spinning after a second :(

edit: it's started working again (the fan)

still nothing in the way of a beep or anything on screen. just a lot of activity.

What video card are you using? Have you tried reseating it?

Does your video card require extra power from the PSU in the form of 6 or 8 pin PCI-E connectors? If so are they connected correctly?
