What about insurance, would you demand that you be insured so that your mortgage is paid off should something bad happen ?

I'm currently considering it actually.

Would be more than double my salary over 6 months.

Is that with the company you are working for in the UK ?

It is indeed. I'm currently a technical team leader on an outsourced government IT contract.

UK civilian government ?

Would the work involve leaving protected base area's out "into the wild" so to speak ?

I'm of the opinion that spending a month in the local green zone is fairly risk free, but being out and about is not......

Depends on the work.

Secure wireless networks, with integration into RADIUS authentication. Bit of a niche area.

Yeah, but thats not what I'd be doing, just for the same company.

The last 2 months of the 6 month stint would include travelling out and fixing IT equipment in jeeps and choppers.

You feel any need to be concerned about being out in public so to speak ?

Not sure how i feel about that, going to give it some more thought i think. I've heard it could be 4x what i can earn here, depending on the project specifics.

Could knock 5 years off my mortgage in 3 months.....its tempting.

Yeah same here, if it happens. Its potentially anywhere in the world where this customer wants this stuff working.

Just so happens that Iraq / Afghanistan is where the biggest need is, at the mo. Who knows where the oppressive jackboot of western imperialism will fall next ? Could be in Iran next year
