Hi,

Just thinking about getting a sub for my Focus, well i dont want to use a standard box due to the space it takes up in the boot. Well what are the important things when it comes to designing/building an enclosure? I am thinking about it going along the side of my boot along the whole length, would i be correct saying that the area inside the box needs to be a certain amount? Also does the sub need a certain area behind it of only air?

Seems easy enough, and well, just put it this way the maths is not a problem. I was looking at a 10" setup i think, found some decent packs from cad or cas online. Only want to spend £130odd on the amp, wiring and sub really.

Edit - Is it alright to have the amp in the inside of the box? Im one for not liking anything on show or it must have its one place as it were.

Well I have that exact setup in my Focus, so you have a pretty good idea how it would sound. ;)

Yup i do, but wait, isnt that £15 less then you paid? ;)

Edit - One other thing i realised is that id want a grill for it. Any ideas?

I guess he means dont have an open enclosure unless you want to be a chav? I was going to do a fully enclosed one anyways as its easier to make.

Edit - In the link you gave me it said this about Vented ones thoguh.

"Vented enclosures – also known as ported or bass-reflex systems – are more complex than sealed boxes, but the extra construction work required to install a vent has its rewards. Vented boxes are more efficient than their sealed counterparts, since they channel sound waves from the front and rear of the cone into the listening environment. Other virtues of the vented design include better reproduction of low bass, a reasonably flat response curve, and low distortion – provided the box is properly constructed."

Im also not that keen on losing the spare really. :S

I love it. :D Its a brillaint first car in my opinion. It has enough power to start with if your a new driver. The handling should help you get out of situations if you mis judge a corner, which is one thing i love about it. Also its large enough to be practical really. The only downsides are the mpg isnt the best and the standard head unit is useless.

I have worked out the enclosure will have to be about 20cm wide to have enough volume of air. Which isnt bad in my opinion.

20cm wide?
thats like 8 inches, you have a 12" wide sub.
or do you mean depth?

Well really it would be the depth of the enclosure but i am thinking it in terms of how its orientated in the boot you see, hense the mix up. :p The sub needs atleast 13cm behind it i found out aswell so its all fine.

Mark,

Thats just about what id like to do but just build it myself so its cheap.

Oakesy2001uk,

Its the width thats more important for me as i have rc planes and have my rear seats down to fit them in. I can fit more in that way and that one you linked me is 350mm wide compared to 150-200mm width(depth of box) if i did a custom enclosure. Then i also get a 290W setup then.
