I have 4b of RAM and according to task manager between 70-75% is being used pretty much at all times. As you can see from the screenshot the list of running processes do not add up to the near enough 3gb that task manager says im using.

Has something gone wrong or am i being thick and missing something obvious?

Thanks

how many threads and extensions does that firefox have open?

Also, do a malware scan, and get your poker addiction treated

I'm glad I'm not into online gambling. Having said that, my Firefox 5 without any tabs open is a bit sore on the memory.

Online poker has won me several thousand pounds so i think i'll stick with it for the time being. After doing a reboot and immediately checking task manager its at 1.4gb despite svchost.exe being using the most at 80mb.

I'll run spybot and malwarebytes but im usually pretty good at not getting infected.

It's normal for windows 7 (and vista) as it uses memory differently to windows xp. I have 4Gigs of ram, win 7 pro x64 and very rarely go below 2gig usage according to task manager. It's superfetch etc as said.

edit for reference: According to task manager I am currently running at around 67-70% physical memory so around 2.5-3gigs usage. Firefox is currently at 430megs (blames flash and youtube), and the rest of my visible processes add up to about the same, mind you not all 90+ processes are visible. I have no spyware, virus, adware etc on my system

edit 2: don't forget if the os is 32bit you've got less memory to play with so that's 71% of say 3.5Gigs max which is around 2.5gigs of ram usage which is in line with my rig.

I knoticed my firefox behaving extremely strangely yesterday actually.

I browsed to a site, that froze my browser, and Firefox was using 700mb if ram!

Im running latest version with no extensions....

First time I'v seen Firefox go that funny to be honest...

edit*

Have you noticed ocasionally many plugin-container.exe's running?

I thought Firefox encapsulated all the plugins within a single plugin-container.exe, or does it run different plugins in seperate containers?

In Windows 7 if you type 'resource monitor' into the start menu search (you can also get to it through the task manager under the 'performance' tab, that program should show you hard disk activity by process (under 'disk') I believe. At least I think that's what it's showing me. :p
