each graphics card is individual so it depends on the card.
The way i overclocked my 280 was to have core and shader clock linked and use the mouse scroll wheel one notch, test in a game that is fairly demanding for about 10/15 mins and if it works close the game move the clocks up a scroll again and open up yhe game again and test. the just keep repeating this until it is unstable and set it back to the last stable clock. then if you want unlink the clocks to fine tune each clock by repeating previous steps. then after that move onto memory clock and repeat as before
