Hi there.

I've noticed recently when I'm using firefox, it eats up a large chunk of memory, and some of the websites I use which require flash make my computer go crazy, anytime I load skysports or fifa ultimate team app. Firefox wants around 600mb of ram....I think thats a tad high right?

I don't really enjoy using Chrome so I'm wondering, what decent browsers are there around?

Depends what OS you're using. Despite the detractors IE10 is a good all-round browser these days. I like Opera but find it has just too many odd problems with sites to be able to use it full time. Firefox seems to be getting better after a period of turning into messy bloatware. Ironically although still pretty much the quicker browser, I find Chrome to also be the most memory hungry. Safari is "meh". Maybe something like "Iron" which is based on webkit/chromium but without the inevitable privacy concerns?

Privacy isn't too much of an issue with me. It's mainly as I use a laptop with only 6GB of ram, once I have a few sites loaded with or without flash, it makes me laptop get hot because it's using more power...

IE9 is forced upon us at work, but at home, depends what I'm doing, I generally use Firefox and/or Chrome :)

Flash makes your CPU heat up, not tabs. Don't worry about memory usage, you have plenty.

This. 'Only' 6GB of RAM? LOL I'm typing this on a 10 year old PC running a Pentium 4 and 1GB of RAM and it's more than adequate for web/mail. It's actually fast when booted into Linux but I'm in Win7 atm so 'adequate' is about the right word.

Chrome reports higher memory usage than it actually has, it's an ongoing bug. Firefox is much lighter and faster these days, but still loses out to Chrome on HTML5 support and sync features overall imho. Just pick what you like and stick to that. With a relatively modern machine and 6GB RAM I can assure you the machine isn't bottle-necking any browser!

I have many windows and tabs open. On 8gb ram machine, I do find Google Chrome using too much ram up. I have now decided to use Palemoon which is based on Firefox but it 64 bit, and it is working very well. I use this in conjunction with chrome.

As always its a personal preference thing, personally I like Opera and Firefox so I would say give Opera a try since you already tried Firefox, remember with Opera they have both official 32 and 64 bit versions available.

Safari/ie10

I've gone right of Firefox, had been using it for years, but it's slowly got worse. Like all things it goes round in phases, I'm sure they'll be back in a couple of versions.

They all eat RAM once you start leaving a couple of tabs open, Opera seems to be the worst for it at the moment though as it'll happily consume upwards of 1GB.

Still, I prefer Opera for some weird reason.

Chrome is my preference. I only use Firefox when I need to use firebug and check cross browser compatibility.

Why is everyone so fussed about RAM usage?

Indeed. I have 8GB of RAM for a reason. :D

40 tabs open.

Firefox for me! Want to use chrome as my default browser but in my experience it just isn't as good as firefox on the whole, including speed and smoothness for rendering/loading web pages.

I use IE, and always have. I also have firefox, which I have a couple of handy plugins for checking stylesheets and the like, but much prefer IE.
