whats a definition of a chav?
"Chavs are british white trash = racist
chavs are council estate scum
chavs are youths who like wearing tracksuits and burberry, plenty of baseball caps and trainers. They have young girlfriends with babies and have names like wayne and kev and dillon
chavs are lower class people. " this was taken form a on line dictionary

Main Entry: chav
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: the lower class; uneducated and ignorant people

If thats the definiton then what would be a name for upper/middle class educated and ignorant people.

It seems to me that the middle/upper class are targeting the white lower class.

there are lots of upper/middle class people that are scum yet theres no definition for those.

toffs and snobs arnt as bad as being called a chav.

they were when they first originated, the difference is "chav" is a new term, hence it will be a while before its considered common place light hearted terminology.

p.s. im lower class (if you believe in the class system these days which to be honest i dont), and i dont like chavs, who were formerly known as "townies" where im from. what i will say is the online dictionary is wrong when it says "chavs" are lower class people, they are a type of people and they are all throughout the lower and middle classes.

I mentioned something to my girlfriend yesterday regarding this, there were three boys from about 10 years to 13 hanging around outside, all wearing white trainers, and "sporty" clothes, with baseball caps on there heads. Now I pretty much thought of a "chav" when I saw them...But what can youth actually wear nowadays that doesn't get them labled in this way?

I think when I was younger I wore the same, but I would have never been regarded or acted like a chav.

So there is some unfairness with it all now, and most youth can't win with what they wear.

A couple of chavs decided to throw a brick (in fact a lump of concrete) towards my house last night. Currently waiting on the roofer that's calling in 15mins to fix the damage. Now if only i could get hold of the little sods

As far as I'm concerned "Sportswear" now has a stigma attached to it. Anyone who dons a full tracksuit and baseball cap isn't doing it by accident. Most of the labeled sportsware I see people in costs far more than the clothes everyone I knows buy, so you can't say it's cost that makes them buy it.

Sportswear is the uniform of a person who lacks their own identity.

That's all down to opinion.

I know what you mean, when I was 10,11,12 I didn't really think about what clothes I wore, whatever were cheapest!

Yes but I doubt they choose the clothes, their parents will.

To me chav is not what you wear (however that may come into it) it is a state of mind an attitude if you like, normally the attitude consists of "I'm better than everyone else" and "I'll smack that guy and hopefully I'll look good in front of my freinds" etc etc thats the way I see it anywho

The parents should know far better than their children though, thats even worse.

More and more I blame the image for the identity, the "Sportswear" uniform makes them feel part of a group or culture. There is a whole lifestyle and attitude that is associated with this image and many of them are trying to live up to it.

Living in Romford, Essex i feel that i have expert knowledge on thsi subject. :D

The average Essex/ East London chav (Chavus Londinium) Left school, or planning on, at 15/16. He/she wears white trainers, these are essential and a baseball cap, preferably of the NIKE brand.

Wearing sports clothes, tracksuits is mandatory as is swearing in public at the top of your voice for no apparent reason.

Its very rare to see a solo chav, they tend to appear in groups of 10+.

Like a lot of words i think chav has evolved to encompass a marge larger swathe of "working class scum" than it was originally used to describe.

I truley hope that one day their are "death squads" like in brazil, patrolling the streets gunning down anyone dressed like this. :D

No respect for the law, and rebelling agaisnt everything way too extremely.

If my kid was like this i would seriously throttle him till he/she got it out of their system.

The first time I heard an explanation for the word CHAV it was "Council House and Violent". It didn't sit well with me, but it's close enough. They've got a different name in different areas (on Tyneside they're "charvas", my Scottish mates call 'em "neds" while a friend from Scarborough calls them "twokkers" which is just a play on Take WithOut Consent).

Someone before me hit the nail on the head - it's not about where you live or what class you're perceived to be a part of (that's if you even believe any kind of class system has a function in our society), it's about how you act. It's the mob mentality (this includes things like everyone wearing shellsuits, the bravery in numbers, matching hairstyles), the lack of social/moral/ethical conscience, and the (very) apparent lack of intelligence I see displayed all too often. Blame the parents, the benefits system and a judiciary structure which doesn't recognise them for what they are; a plague.

But to answer the original question, a chav is a whiny, *****, cowardly, thieving, devious little gutter-rat in a tracksuit hanging around the streets in groups with his pals - half of whom are on bikes, the other half are smoking cheap tabs. Bling is optional.

Hope that's cleared things up ;)

Possibly the most concise and accurate description I have ever heard.

The breeding rate of Chavs is very worrying. Most people are doing their best to get a good career and get on the housing market etc. They are thinking they don't have the time or money required to bring a child up properly so are putting it off until they are older. All the while the streets are filling with tracksuited offspring.
