What is a decent mid-range camera?

One of the things I am struggling to work out is the difference between Canon Powershot's, such as the A640, and the ELPH Cameras??

Is it simply that the latter is smaller and less manual?

Please help, the more I read the more confused I get!!!

Anyone?

I read something negative about the xD cards and use with Macs -- apparently, they are terribly slow...???

I wouldn't say that is a deal breaker. XD cards are slower than sd but shooting jpeg you won't notice much difference and does it matter if it takes a little bit longer loading the shots to your mac? If you really want feedback on this ask on the fuji forum at dpreview as there must be someone there who uses a mac. You could also look at the f40 which can use sd cards.

I read bits about the F40, seems to be a worse option than the 31....

The reason why the the Fuji is tempting over here in the UK is that I can pick it up for about £130, whereas the SD800 is £200 and the SD900 another £20 on top of that -- this fact alone might surely suggest the Fuji is the one to go for.

After some serious decison making tonight, I've decided the A640/710 are too big, which does leave me wanting an ultra compact instead....

I looked at Casio, Panasonic, but they don't seem to be as good in the reviews as Fuji and the Canons.

But my concern with the Fuji is simply that when I go abroad to hot countries, with bright light, I am going to start running into problems.... Although I have seen outdoor shots with it and it looks ok to me..

So everything seems to point to the Fuji, but then when you consider build quality, you start to consider the Canon once more..

Well, I thought I would update everyone....

I've decided on the G7 -- a camera that I fell in love with as soon as I held it, making it impossible to ever want to get one of the ultra compacts, as they just don't feel as good...

The sample pictures I have looked at are great, and it seems to offer everything I have now decided I want...

Good zoom, optical view finder option, lovely build quality, excellent image quality, relatively good low light ability...

I've used a Canon Powershot G3 for 4 years and have been completely happy with it, I reckon you've made a good choice, the S3 IS is good too (great zoom!). I've recently started to take my photography more seriously, and am finding out things about my G3 I didn't know existed...
