What is a ES model?

Engineering Sample. Typically earlier revision silicon sent to review partners and large customers (think motherboard manufacturers, PC manufacturers, etc) so they can get their products ready for the actual release.

A lot of the time they are lower clocked also.

Yes, it was one eBay, i did not buy it in the end, only cos my bid was not accepted just because i have score of 100% (1) positive, not to worry, but wait a little longer and see how AMD Ryzen pans out, it does read on the CPU "INTEL CONFIDENTIAL" but i did not notice that when asking :) thanks for the replies ;)

They're regarded as ES as the design has not been fully validated yet. It could mean there are bugs, busted functionality or just lower clocks.

If it is late ES, then they can be fantastic, don't touch an early or unknown ES chip.

Unless you are a tinkerer of course. I'd quite like an ES chip just because its an ES chip. :p

Sometimes have dasher clicked than decided on specification.

Cache can differ too, a laptop quad core sandybridge es I had contained 8mb cache rather than the 6mb that retail shipped with.

They can be good clickers too, since Intel want good parts being initially send out for testing and reviews.
