what is a good free mmorpg ?

Give RuneScape a go.

I used to play it when I was a kid and it was great, it's changed a hell of a lot now and for a browser + free game I don't think much else beats it.

If you mean free as in no subscriptions then get Guild Wars 2. You buy the game and keep it forever. Or if you mean free as in completely free then get Star Wars: The Old Republic

Need to be more specific. Free as in free trial? Or free to play?

If the latter then any of the most popular free to play games on steam would suit you, planetside 2 being the most popular mmo on the list currently. Although if you go the steam route there's a distinct danger you may just end up playing tf2 all day long :)

I suggest steam simply because it's the easiest option, but there are thousands of free mmos so you'll need to specify at least a type if you want recommendations away from the obvious (planetside 2, lord of the rings etc.).

If you want something ridiculously complicated and don't mind paying a bit then take a look at eve online :p

everquest has always had a good following and the original everquest 1 is now free to play and i think still has a large following.
Everquest 2 also has a free to play option.

if you might be interested in spreadsheets in space then Eve online, but as a new player you'll always be behind everyone else as the skills are trained in real time.

their are numerus star wars galaxies servers out their i believe.

aldepends on what your looking for and enjoy. free doesn't always equall bad though. but you do get what you pay for..

Bestest ever one is "Earth & Beyond" eeryone needs to play this

Not that im trying to start an eve war.

I recently started this for the first time (nearly 2 months in now) and its blown my mind. If you get over the insanely hard initial start, find a corp and do something you want to do its phenomenal.

Its hard, unforgiving and complex. Possibly the last MMO like it. (A positive in my mind)

Its also a total sandbox too.

Its not free though requiring £10 a month approx sub. However once you earn 500-600m ISK a month in game (current cost of a plex) you can use it to pay for your sub so it does eventually become free.

As for always being behind. Not true. If you chose to specialize into something specific you like. you can comfortable "max" that area out in short order. The benefit 6-7 years of solid playing, is the number of specialties, making you extremely versatile (or cap ship capable) But it doesn't make you more effective than a relatively new player who is specialized in the same role (except when looking at cap ships, due to HUGE skill time requirements....naturally)

Its certainly not for everyone, the tutorial (despite its huge improvements) its still un-engaging and tedious making those first few days the hardest. but it really is a fantastic game.

My corp prouduces and smuggles illegal drugs (combat boosting effects) to large PvP war corps :D Its excellent fun, huge risk. good money :D

The original EverQuest hasn't existed for years. They did pretty much the same thing they did with SWG. Took a game lots of people enjoyed and rogered it silly.

The modern EQ is a pale imitation of the good old days.

I tried to find the "nub" of eve online when I was playing, I tried to find what was great about it but I failed.

I was just mining a asteroid then I thought to myself "this is pointless and stupid" so I stopped playing.

I'd like to go back and find what makes the game special as I love the sound of what people talk about eve that makes it great.

Eve is an amazing game, when I finally got round to giving it my proper time - I was totally blown away by it. I only played for about 7-8 months (I was primarily mining/construction) but I had a really good corp and most of the time thoroughly enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, while I was in a break period from it because of work, the Seo died (RIP Scotian) and the corp split up - I wasn't sure where to go and drifted before leaving. Come to think of it, not sure what it's like for anyone else but I always find in MMO's when you've had a really good guild it's always tough to find one that lives up to it again.

Just downloading World of Tanks, I played the beta briefly but thought it was boring - going to give it a proper go, hopefully change my mind.

The Secret World is worth a go if you don't mind paying the box price, they got rid of the subscription.
