What is a swear word?

I think swear words are a load of rubbish.

At the end of the day they are used in place of other meanings.

F off - Go away.
The S word - means poo.

It's only a swear word because someone told you they are.
It's just a sound that you perceive to be offensive that's why I don't agree that they are offensive, rather the person who hears it is choosing to be offended because they're told it is offensive.

I like the historical connotations to swear words ie calling someone a Berk is very offensive even though its now considered tame compared to other words. its due to the fact that to be a berk you are actually being called a Berking Hunt (think about it). so there is always a little back story behind words.

it was Whoopie Goldberg that said when asked about the use of the N word.

"It's just a word nothing more, it only has power if you give it power"

So a swear word is whatever the person hearing the word thinks is one :)

Al she is very funny and would seem an excellent lecturer had them all eating out of the palm of her hand. very high energy to her lecture and purpose.

I really like that goldberg quote.

It's Berkeley Hunt my dear chap ;)

When I was a young man I used to think swear words were just 'words' and why should people be upset etc etc.
After being in various places where (normally) young men are ****** & blinding in front of women & kids, it soons gets a tad embarrassing and in the past I have many times asked young men to stop swearing in front of my wife & kids.
I swear like a trooper but hopefully I keep to people I know who won't be offended.
They may be words but the pen is mightier than the sword (so some say).
