What is acceptable clothing for a casual weekend rider?

I'm intrigued... As per my other thread I've now got my old bike back in the road (read: towpaths and avoiding the roads at all costs because London drivers are crazy).

Going out and riding along the towpaths in jeans seems a bit silly. Likewise I'm just not going to wear full-on lycra! I have some running gear but that doesn't seem right... The 'regular' shorts I own aren't great for cycling.

So what is acceptable for an easy ride at the weekend, avoiding pedestrians and stopping at the pub for a (takeaway) pint? :)

(This isn't a "omg I'm so worried about what I look like" I'm just intrigued as to what the more casual riders might wear now the weather is a bit more nippy)

Used to wear tights with baggy shorts over the top. Now would wear stretch trousers like alpkit chilkoot. Top half a fleece over a base layer if not needing a waterproof.

Thanks. I actually need to get some running tights so what I might do is have those, and get some mountain biking style shorts to wear over the top. I have some long sleeve Helly Hansen baselayers I've been using for running so I think those plus a tshirt/other layers should probably do me over the winter. I think!
