arknor, when Google went down, the world's internet usage went down by 40%, so it does have some effect

Well, it's all just gone kinda nuts over there. Maybe it's a US internet invasion. 
but, I guess, seriously. The sites hit were all major traffic centres. Rape their databases for info and you have everything you need to be able to come out in 2 weeks and say "ok, we listened. We shut it down" and have a snapshot of pretty much the whole online population to work through. Storage is cheap, processing time isn't. So grab everything and store it. We're ********.
This is the same government that built stuxnet. A virus to kill Irans nuclear research computers (it screwed with the controller on the centrifuge). The target being a computer that wasn't connected to the internet so they had to make it "hitch a ride" on a usb stick or similar...

Yeah, I was referring to Google rather than Amazon, which is also mentioned in the article.
