I am sorry if this appears to be a relatively simple question but i am a noob :o
When it comes to CPU's what is better, one with less cores but running at a faster GHz or one with more cores running at a slower GHz?
 
All depends on what your using your machine for. Gaming, two cores with four threads or greater. Encoding, processing etc quad core processors.
 
More cores cpu will be better as more applications are multi core/threaded. A single faster core cpu will only perform better in applications that are single threaded. Once you start using multi threaded programs a single core cpu will struggle heavily against multi core cpu. You can always overclock multi core cpu anyway;).
