hi,
I have a powercolor hd7870 xt myst graphics card and recently, not so often but sometimes the graphics card craps itself and i have to restart to get it back to normal.
seems to not be load related as it has happened in games as well as idling

This has to be a gpu error because i have another monitor running off the igp and that still works fine when this happens so i know the pc hasnt crashed completely. currently on 13.8 drivers and will update to 13.9 and see if anything changes.

anybody had this before? if so what was the solution?

thanks,
smithy

I had this issue with my 7970 when using 2 monitors. I ran one at 120Hz and the second at 60Hz, so I assumed that was the issue and just removed my 60Hz. Perhaps this is the issue?

However, I'm sure it was card now as the problem no longer exists on my R9 290X. Either that, or the card simply didn't support 2 different refresh rates simultaneously.

This is exactly (the same coloured lines and even layout, like lines and then a bit down the bottom with no lines) what I was getting from my card as posted here - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18553741

Exactly the same problem I was getting, 7970 with two monitors, one at 144Hz and one at 60Hz.

LtMatt workaround fix on my thread seems to have sorted it out for me. Hopefully it will work for you as well :)

Aww, I didn't know you could fix it! :( - oh well!

The thing is the other monitor is running off the cpu/motherboard and they both have the same refresh rates anyway. Someone suggested forcing the 3d clocks to see if that helps but since i dont know how to make the error happen and since it happens so randomly i have no idea how i'm supposed to check that

clocks are default at 975MHz core and 1500MHz memory
i did used to have small overclocks on them but not since i rebuilt in january. the screen errors have been happening for a month or 2 now, not often enough for me to be able to say for sure whether or not they are gone and i havent really found a way to force them.
