What is controlled folder access Windows Security?

I have come accross an option called 'controlled folder access' on Windows Security - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/security/defender-endpoint/controlled-folders?view=o365-worldwide

I have enabled it but it's very frustrating as pretty much after any app update or even taking photos in games it comes up with a notification saying the access was blocked and I have to go into Windows Security to allow the process.

Do I actually need it enabled as it's incredibly frustrating having to do this all the time? Is it enabled at default, I can't remember? I am a home user.

Thanks!

Don't think this is enabled by default (except perhaps system folders) in home or Pro.

The last bit of that article is probably what you are looking for, remove the common folders that are giving you grief. Obviously you won't benefit from any of the "added protection" from ransomware, however good that is...
Thank you.
