OK ... The one thing i've never done with computers is try and overclock them

I've just started looking at my specs (while following the sticky guide on the forum) and i have a question

I have an Intel e8400 3.0ghz ... It runs 6 x 333

Now this is the bit i'm confused with ... 6 * 333 = 1998. Shouldn't my multiplier and FSB equal 3000 i.e. the 3.0ghz bit of my CPU?

I know this is the 'Core speed' but in what way does that relate to the CPU speed i.e. 3.0ghz?

If i overclock for example 6 x 400 this has a core speed of 2400, but what does that make my CPU? 3.2ghz, 3.4ghz, 3.6ghz???

How'd i work it out?

I know i've missed something somewhere :)

Lol thanks all ... My FSB now reads 333 and my multiplier is 9.

After i've finished overclocking is it beneficial to re-enable the speedstep setting?

Surely running the CPU at max all the time would effect lifespan?

I found it in the 'Advanced' menu of my BIOS. Under the CPU settings.

I had to disable speedstep and something called C1E as 95thrif suggested

I also found a guide specific to my motherboard by typing in 'P5Q-E overclocking' into google ... try doing the same with whatever your motherboard is.
