What is done on an interim service?

Hi guys,

I am planning an interim servcie for my 2003 Yamaha R1. Unfortunately it also needs valve clearances to be checked and/or adjusted as required.

Does anyone know what the interim service involves? I am pretty sure I can handle most of it except the valves, I really don't wanna take the top off the engine, but am happy with oil,coolant changes, brake pads, putting in a new battery etc.

An 'Intermin' or 'small' service is normally the basic stuff - oil & filters, brake and clutch fluid, check and grease everything. It should say in your handbook (or google it) what should be done on that service. Valve checks means it's a main or 'big' service, which does all the above plus valve clearance checks.

I'm pretty sure I can get my local Yamaha dealer to check the valves for me, and I can do the rest. Any idea how much I should be payiing for valve clearances on an R1? I honestly don't have a clue, just a ballpark figure would be a help, guys. I gather it's quite a few hours of labour and my local mechanic charges quite a lot per hour so am worried about that mainly.

It's a few hundred quid from what I've heard. Plus if any shims are required they may have to order them and then go back to the bike to install them. However if you are going to a main dealer you might be in luck. Every google search comes back in american but it seems the top end is $400.

From what they are saying it's easy to check the clearances and whether they need doing or not...installing the shims is another matter. I'd do the check myself and then take it in if anything needs doing

I was quoted around £2-300 for valve clearances on my SV I imagine it'll be in that ballpark for most bikes.

Valve check, depending on bike, be extra charge if they have to replace shim buckets or what ever. Was between 140-170. Mine didn't need any, and never been checked in 28k.
