What is essential in life?

After 33 years of constant working in factories I've been on the dole since mid september and whats essential to me is getting up in the morning and earning a days wages.

Apart from the obvious air, food and water, I remember seeing a video of Neil Strauss mentioning that to be satisfied everyday one must;

1: Do a hard days work.
2: Do something physical, running, gym etc.
3: Do something social, go out with friends.
4: Do something you love, be it playing the guitar, drawing or whatever.

Nothing of the above is essential to live life in it's simplistic form, but I suppose it comes down to what degree you want to live.

From what i remember correctly from my year 10 business studies lessons with Mr Evans (leg-end) there are 5 essentials to life...

Food
Water
Heat
Shelter
Cant remember the last one, but i think it might be air.... hmmmm he didnt teach me that well :p

Edit: For me though personally excluding the above i would say that doing a hard days work for me is a real achievement, getting the days results back, analysing them and seeing if i have made any progess (work in a lab). Then going home to relax, or hangin out with friends. I think i have a pretty good balance of the phrase work to live, not live to work (or some thing like that)

He was probably trying to teach you about Maslow's hierarchy of needs which has five levels going from the essentials to survive all the way up to self actualisation. Wikipedia has a lot more detail on it than I'll be going into at the moment. :)
