This will sound really dumb and sound like I have lived in a cave for 20 years, but can someone explain Final Fantasy?

I'm aware its a RPG, but is it like Zelda in parts with free exploration/fighting etc or is it turn based like Pokemon? / Phantasy Star.

I'm not sure I'd like it if it was anything like world of warcraft as again I might be missing the point but there seems like a lot of repetition in that kind of game.

Lastly if I decided I wanted to play it what would be a decent starting point, would I miss out by just buying the latest version?

Most final fantasy games are completely self contained. Though all of them carry forward elements, chocobos and ultimate weapon for example.

All are JRPGs, the older games are turn based, the more recent ones are real time, they all contain free exploration, but battles are generally done in a seperate screen (with the exception of the latest, but even then a seperate interface is used)

You wouldn't miss out of anything buying the latest version, but get yourself a copy of 7 or 9 to start of on, they are awesome :D

Final Fantasy is similar to Phantasy Star (1-4) or Dragon Quest, so a traditional turn-based JRPG. Basically the big three franchises since old-school days.

As mentioned by the poster before, each game has completely different characters, stories, world settings and gameplay skill mechanics so they are not sequals but completely seperate games. FFX/FFX-2 and FFXIII/FFXIII-2 being the exceptions, the "-2" is a giveaway there, and FFXI/FFXIV being MMORPGs. Basically you have the main numbered series and then spin-offs like Final Fantasy Tactics.

The only things that do carry over in each Final Fantasy game are basically trademarks associated with the franchise since they were introduced during the earlier games e.g. Chocobos, Job Classes, the official theme song or jingles, fusion of ancient, medieval and sci-fi, airships, certain names from different real-life mythologies like Gilgamesh, Ragnarok etc.

This is purely subjective. While many love 6 and 7, 8 9 10 and 13 have all been met with some that love it and some that think it is the worst in the series.

I really really enjoyed my time with 8 and 10 and now 13. I never really played 7 and 9 didn't interest me on release. I have both on my PSN account which I'll now wait to play on the PSV when it arrives and I am genuinely looking forward to the opportunity.

XIII (the latest one for the OP) scored an average of 82.5 on metacritic and was the fastest selling FF game of all time according to Square despite the tiny install base relative to the PS2 & FFXII. It was widely praised as having one of the best battle systems of the series but its downfall was that for the first 10 chapters (20 ish hours) it is one long corridor. It's still made for an interesting story and if I could just stop Vanille making orgasm noises all the damn time it would be even better.

Everyone has their preference and that's fine. At least make it clear that it is just an opinion and not just "everyone knows it crap, you might as well not bother."

A game doesn't sell 6.5 million copies if it is not worth playing.

Unfortunately you might be a little late to the Final Fantasy train, the latest ones are generally regarded as a bit poor.

The glory days of the PS1 are long over. X, XI (MMO) and XII were average, XIII is absymal and XIV (MMO) is regarded as an utter failure in an alien genre it was never going to survive in.

Just because something sells over 6 million doesn't necessarily mean it's a good game. Look at all the movie-to-game adaptations that routinely hit the top of the sales charts. Final Fantasy sells by virtue of the series name.

I disagree that X, XI and XIII were average. In fact, they had some rather compelling stories and gameplay. XII was, personally, average.

But I can agree that XIV was/is crap. But that's because they really have no idea how to make a decent MMO after XI.

It's all subjective really. Pick one and go with it. X is probably the best of the newest generation (after the PS1) and there's a HD remake coming which might be worth a pop. I started by watching a friend with VII and it took about ten minutes for me to rush out and buy my own copy and then the madness started.

Final fantasy is the greatest RPG series of all time, I love me some FF

- And that's coming from someone who hates RPGs

You guys are going to hate me, I don't get Final Fantasy! Never have! Don;t like it!:) But I love Elder Scrolls :D

Nothing wrong with having your own opinion. I (for the most part) love them, though I know several people who could never get into them, with the exception of FFVIII which they really enjoyed. Strangely, VIII is actually my least favorite.

I don't think it's possible to get final fantasy as a whole, key point would be, play the games more!! there is a reason it's one of the most popular long running game series of all time :D
