What is GK110?

Is this another line up of cards being released? Is the GK104 just a cash cow and should I purchase a 680 or wait a while?

AFAIK GK100 was the "real" GTX680 and GK110 looks like being the GTX7xx.

Original Nvidia line up was:

GK110 - GTX 780, early 2013
GK100 - GTX 680, mid 2012, a cut down GK110 like a GTX 480 is to a 580.
GK104 - GTX 670Ti, the original nomenclature for the current GTX 680, plus a cut down non Ti version later
GK106 - GTX 660 / 660 ti, up to 768 shaders, 64 rops, but only 192 bit memory interface, out soon
GK107 - GTX 650 - 384 Shaders, 128 bit memory interface, basically a crippled GTX 560 ti that will perform a little worse than the GTX 460, but also cost a lot less.

The dual GK104 card won't have different GPU names, it will simply be 2 x GK104.

The renaming of the GTX 670 ti to the GTX 680, and release of the GK104 as Nvidias high end card is the reason why so many people are referring to it as an overpriced mid range GPU because that's what it is. The reason it has terrible GPGPU and memory interface is because Nvidia were never designing ot to be their highest end chip.

NVIDIA are now scrapping their cut down inefficient 'GTX 480' of this generation if you will, I.E the GK100 to focus on getting the full 'GTX 580' released sooner.

GK110 was originally due for release early 2013, but the latest information now shows that due to scrapping production on the GK100, the GK110 is now planned for October - December 2012.

This way Nvidia are making far more profit on GK104, and don't have to release the GK100 as it would only undercut sales of their more profitable GK104 chip.

Some very useful info bhavv, thank you. I am currently wanting to purchase a 3D/120Hz Monitor but will need a nvidia card, due to the information you have listed make it extremely awkward not to be screwed.

Id rather wait too for GK110 to be released, as it will bring prices on the GK104 down to what they should be. My dual 560 tis would still be good for another year or two anyway.

I'm thinking of skipping Kepler entirely and waiting for 16 nm Maxwell in 2014 too.

GK110 is another gpu from nivida that's made on 28nm and has a big core die. That's all that's know. Some ppl say that the manufacturing such a big die on 28nm is so bad we might only see GK110 in limited numbers as a Tesla card and not a consumer gpu.

There is no suggesting that this was the real 680 GTX because it's rumoured to be out in 2013.

think I'll be skipping this gen of Kepler. Grab some 780's whenever they come out, hopefully that'll be a bigger jump from a 480 :)

Might just pick up a 680 or 670Ti and see what happens down the line. 700 series will more than likely add another £100 or so to the prices anyway.

well hopefully the gtx690 dual gpu should be good since its got a lower power draw + less heat produced unlike the hot gtx590

bring on the evga gtx690 F T W edition (8+6 Power Design, 8 Phase PWM) :D

I think the 780 will be mostly a refresh of the 680, sort of like the 480 to 580, so don't expect a massive increase in performance, somewhere between 5% to 15% I'd say.

Also, if the rumours of the 680 originally intended to be the 670 Ti are true, then expect performance difference between the 680 and 780 to be around the difference between a 570 and 580, i.e. not much. That is unless of course they change the GPU from it's original design, which I think is unlikely, possibly some changes in the clockspeeds, but nothing dramatic.

My best guess is that the GK110 is the same GPU as the GK104, but with 384bit memory bus (possibly 512bit), more memory, higher clocks and all the GPU compute hardware that was clearly stripped from the GK104. This would mean that for most people the performance difference would be minor, except in specific circumstances, such as high-res/multi-monitor setups and people who need the full on compute capabilities.

If you need/want a GPU now, you'd be silly to wait in my opinion, something better will be around the corner, ad infinitum. Plus 2013 is still quite far away in the world of GPUs.

Most rumours for GK110 indicate that it is roughly GK104 plu 50% more shaders and memory bandwidth.

GK104 = 1536 shaders / 256bit VRAM
GK110 = 2304 shaders / 384bit (possibly 512bit) VRAM

Given GK104's die size, it is definately not NVidia's Big Gun. GK110 will be significantly large and more powerful than GK104. Most likely it will be almost as large physically as the GTX580, holding 5-5M transistors. In between we should see a GTX690 made up of 2x GK104's (GTX680's) on a single card.

IF you need an upgrade now i wouldn't wait around wishing away the months for a GPU which could be held until mid 2013 if AMD doesn't respond... Even if you bought a 680 now and sold it on release of the GK110 you wouldn't lose that much.

Im running a u2711 on my old x1800xt atm.. but looking at what EVGA staff have said on the forums the 4GB cards are "a couple of months away" So im gonna wait and see but i must say that hydro copper classified looks nice and probably followed by a nice price lol.

but its just "rumours"...

Before the 680 was released the rumoured benchmarks showing 100% increase over the 580 lol.. i mean come on.

When it finally came on the shelf's people noticed it was only 13-14% so i wouldn't be surprised if the GK110 shows a 15% increase over the 680..

We can only wait and see.. Most of what is out there at the moment though is just hot air
