I decided to try a different cooler on the 8800GS that was reaching 128c in the shed folder after another hot day, and another crash. Got it out and this is what I found:

Where there used to be a capacitor, there is now a small brown roll of toilet paper!!!:confused:

Any idea what has happened here? The card still works fine (although running hotter than usual), I thought when caps went they were just a little bit bulging at the top. I had a look around and couldn't find any remains of the cover (see below how it looked before it morphed into bog roll.)

So next course of action? Do I just fit the new cooler and stick it back in, it works after all or change the cap / scrap the card?

Ideas / suggestions much appreciated, at the moment I'm tempted just to put it back in :p

Lol :D:D:D:D, that is the remains of one of the capacitors looks to have failed in the brilliant way they do, you could find out what size you need and replace it 2 minute job.

I'll see if I can work out what size it is then and have a bash at replacing it, if that fails, back in it goes!

So what makes them go pop anyway overclocking or just old age?
