What is good enough for high-end gaming?

My gaming PC as per sig still does very well - at stock on the CPU and using just one GPU its the minimum I'd consider to play at 1920x with high or ultra settings without getting any significant frame drops - clocked to 4GHz on the CPU and with SLI enabled everything runs silky smooth unless I run out of VRAM.

Although you can get away with an AMD CPU I'd suggest putting up the extra for an intel CPU - a Intel Core i5-3550 will be fine unless you plan on overclocking - it boosts to 3.7GHz which is more than enough unless you do demanding number crunching desktop tasks or running a high end multi GPU setup. Unfortunatly the 7850 is the only card thats currently in the price/performance sweet spot that I'd normally reccomend but a GTX670 will probably go a bit further towards the experience your looking for its just hideously over-priced compared to cards that occupied that spot in previous generations.

WHY is everyone suggesting intel. Read his first post

OP, id suggest going AMD. Its fine for any gaming at high res at 1080p.

Go AMD for GPU and CPU. As for the other bits, you will have to choose yourself.

AMD CPUs run hotter and use more power than the last 2 gens of intel CPUs. A sandybridge i3 would be better than the AMD 965, if it's just gaming then even the pentium G840 performs almost as well as the i3. It's a lot cheaper so it's easier to justify upgrading it later for a i5K.

I would have suggested the nvidia 460 over the 6870 myself..... HOWEVER now the 660Ti is released AMD has dropped the prices on their 7000 series cards. With the 7850 going for £165 that 6870 is false economy.

660Ti vs 670

Feel free to adjust the search criteria in the link above to find a GPU that suits your needs for the budget. The offers change on a wednesday so I won't bother spec'ing till the offers are updated

Damn, all this sounded like a really good idea last night, but now it is starting to look a bit expensive. I just payed £1500 for a uk visa application, so "just" £1k is looking pretty good for a pc.

Is the extra cost for a modular power supply worth it?

£360 for a GTX 670 is double that of a 7850 at £180. I'm trying to convince myself that it is worth it, but it will probably be better to get the 7850 now and then in a year or two, buy another card (or maybe another 7850 for crossfire).

If 60fps in games is enough for me (I'm usually very very happy with 30) then I probably don't need a 120Hz monitor. Right?

Until what time do I have to order today, to get the components by tomorrow? I'm planning an awesome long pc building weekend.

i duno online places are pretty amazing at delivering next day, maybe 4pm or later
dont be happy with 30fps!
but yeh unless you are super into your first person shooting games online then 120hz/120fps isnt worth it

it honestly depends exactly what you want to use the pc for these days

if you dont play fast paced games a ips screen is nicer, or you can just get a cheaper one

have you picked out a case u like yet? :)

Then drop the SSD, drop the CPU cooler, fall back to a 7850, and keep the CPU at stock for a while. Do keep a decent power supply and case for later.

Don't rush it. Give it another week to mull around. Deals come and go.

It's mainly practicality and looks. I've built with modular and non modular just fine. You have more cables to hide.

Yes perfectly adequate. I run on a 6950 and don't see the need to upgrade (apart from money burning a hole in my pocket). I wouldn't bother with crossfire. Better to upgrade the card imo.

It's not just the frame rate, but the input latency. It's like the debate when CRTs were still popular, and LCDs were starting to come to the market. Less latency, less ghosting. For 120Hz display, also 3D, but imo overrated.

In any case, given your budget I wouldn't bother. Stick to a decent monitor, £120-£150. Or use your TV.

give it 24-48 hours.

EDIT : BTW, don't bother with AMD. It makes far more sense to get a 3570K (or a 2500K if it wasn't so stupidly expensive). It's worth spending a little in that regard. An overclocked 1055T might be ok, but starting from scratch, get the best CPU you can. Or if you can't, replace the 3570K with a i3 which leave you plenty of room for upgrading although imo you're better of getting the i5 straight away.

I have decided that for once in my life, I am going to overdo things a little bit and go for a nice case and the GTX 670. Had a bit of a crap time lately - so cheering myself up by making sure that I am definitely not going to be disappointed.

Any final advice?
Is the MSI gtx 670 ok, or should I go for one of the slightly cheaper or more expensive models? MSI has the 3 year warranty.
Do I need thermal paste?
Now that I've decided on the GTX 670, would a different motherboard be better? I notice that the Z77-D3H info refers to crossfire, but not sli.

I will probably try to order today. Would like to have a couple of full days to spend on building this and will only be able to take holiday tomorrow and friday.

Thanks for picking up on the cpu. I was actually planning on getting the retail version. Completely missed that I accidentally clicked oem.

Luckily I already have a mouse (currently gaming on my laptop).

I have once again decided that I am an idiot. Will not be paying £300 for a GPU. Went with the 7850 instead.

Final build, will now be ordering. Thanks for all the help everyone. Sorry for being difficult.

I'm pretty certain the monitor will come with a DVI cable, so you don't need to purchase another one. Just search for an un-boxing video on youtube (I would, but I'm at work!)

I read a review somewhere that mentioned the monitor not coming with a cable. Doesn't really matter that much - one can never have too many extra cables.
