(I have other questions , but for now a definitive answer for this one would be helpful.!)

Consider this....

(This is a section of a core temp log file)

0.16,

I had been running a CPU stress test for about 2 hours before this occurred.

(This has happened before)

(core temp was set to trigger a shut-down on overheat, which of course it did given this!)

Is this indicative of a faulty CPU?

(I ask because I have only recently purchased this!)

From what I can tell (just a screenshot of the actual core temp window would have been better) your cpu is hitting 96 degrees? It would help if you told us the cpu, cooler used, is the cpu overclocked, if so what voltage, what are you using to stress?

Sorry, My apologies.

The CPU is a 9590

The first 8 numbers after the time/date stamp are the (Uncorrected) individual core temps as recorded by Core temp.

They are a steady 36C (And had been for nearly 2 hours right up to 22:32:20 )

At that time core 5 suddenly records an "Impossible" 256C and core temp shuts the system down at 22:32:25.

(The numbers to the immediate left of the 4700's represent the core loading for each core, this particular stability tester doesn't appear load the cores to 100%)

AMD? core temp is useless.

I use HWMON and the one to watch is the package temp. 73-78c seems to be about the maximum.

I wouldn't run stress tests on a 8 core AMD. Firstly they tend not to work properly and secondly you'll end up frying your VRMS.
