What is it About MMO's?

Been wondering this over the last couple of days really. What is it about mmo games that attract so many people? Personally I'd much rather play an mmo than any offline games I've got, even though there are some cracking offline games, Oblivion, X3, half Life 2 etc.

Before I started playing Earth & Beyond I thought I'd never pay a monthly sub for a game, but once I statred playing that the bug bit and I've been MMO'ing it ever since, with various titles such as Neocron, SWG, PlanetSide, EVE Online, guildwars, WoW and most recently LTROL.

Which leads onto another question, with paying monthly subs for games, how many do you guys keep acitve? just the one that you sink most of your gaming time into or a couple and then play them both?

When I play an MMO I play it to death. If I'm paying per month then I'm going to want to play it as often and for as long as I can, infact it's that mentality that destroyed my college years.

They're so good because of the community, you make friends and get to know people. Where the community really comes into it though is the competition. Countless times I'd talk to a mate on MSN and he'd say how he'd got this skill or that, then it would be almost impossible for me to resist the urge of going on and catching up.

If you treat them as single player affairs then they're total dross.

It's about progression, with a MMO...im guessing you're referring to an RPG, you get out what you put in. In WoW you can get killed by a noob falling off a ladder and Deagle headshoting you, you will be 70, they will be 10 and provided its PvP they behave or get ganked.

Putting so much time into an RPG is fine with paying subs as u are getting continually new content and saves u money in the long run staying in the odd night instead of dragging yourself out on the lash and ** less likely to buy the on the fence games that might be good cus u'll only take a break from Wow for the greats for example. It's just deadly getting a balance, i chose life rather than attempting the balance, i'll go through the same cycle again with the next big rpg probably.

im a very casual mmo player, only SWG and Lotro have i subscribed too as the content is more to my liking afterall its what i grew up reading and watching , but i never let them take over my life or feel the compulsive need to level level level !! if i take 4mths to get to what a friend achieved in 2 days doesnt bother me, i kinda look at mmo's as a social irc with a gfx addon where RL mates and new friends join in , its this approach i find more entertaining

Lol. with regard Neocron, the community was good from what I remember, and despite the **** load of long standing bugs I really liked it. I thought the setting was great, I just wish it could be taken on board by a company that could redo to it a higher quality, make the city 3 to 4 times bigger and iron out the bugs

i know Zef no offense fella, but i'd got away with it for so long and well even though it was slightly bigger than allowed , a sig with the most successful team in england and europe surely deserved an extra few pixels , as Fub will concur haha /soz for OT

back OT, altho i was saying im more a casual mmo'er ive probably played far too much Lotro as im quite a high lvl now, shame as ive neglected 2142 and other such games ... damn addictive

What have they recently achieved in england?

apart from being 21 pnts behind the leaders.......;p

OT, for me its exactly as zefan describes, a competition with mates, i wanna be the bestest!!

I asked this, like why do I play runescape, and someone said

"because you want to be better then everyone else" ..

and to be honest, he's right. You don't spend all that time getting skills on games like runescape and WoW and then just leave.

Your sig's too tall eekfek. 75 pixels max.

Instead of clicking on every sig in every thread to find criminal signitures, you may as well just go find the mod team and pull your pants down. ;) :D

For me its being able to play cheat free but in reality that just isn't happening -in wow anyway. People selling their accounts then you get some noob trying to heal/tank in end game instances, bots everywhere, gold seller whispers constantly. Really glad they are clamping down on account selling, too little too late as usual from blizzard tho.

Look pal I'm trying to do you a favor. Would you prefer a mod caught it and took away your sig rights forever?

No, you're not trying to do people favours anymore, just trying to be arsey.

Why is everyone having a go at Zefan?

How much ******* effort does it take to make sure your sig fits the forum rules?

Zefan shouldn't have to point out to so many stupid ***** that can't see that their sig is too big

Rant over.

I'm not trying to get myself in the mod team if that's what you think, I wouldn't be able to even if I wanted to.
