What is it like to work for Aldi?

They and Lidl are horrific; I worked for one many moons ago and whilst they may have changed back then they flogged you to get every penny out of you.

They do pay better than most and they believe because they do so they own you, the hours and the grief you get is insane. I did it for 5 years, made a lot of money and then moved on and it's a pretty regular occurrence with them as, especially with a family, the hours they demand are a killer on a social life. People just burn out.

Young and ambitious and don't mind living the job to make the money, go for it. Older and settled I really wouldn't recommend it.
On the other hand my experience has been the total opposite, yes they expect me to work for my money but they don't expect me to live in the office.

This would be true back in the days of when they first opened their stores.

Totally different now.

Maybe they've changed, I've been gone 7 or so years now and a lot can change. Bumped into two of my old colleagues randomly in Newcastle 3-4 month ago and according to them it is much the same.

Best thing I ever did getting out, I would (and did when I bumped into the director a few years after leaving) thank them for the opportunity and it helped me get to where I am today but the key skills I took from them is to manage in the exact opposite manner they advocated and thankfully it has helped me get far.

Each to their own though, perhaps I just had a particular bad batch of management.
