what is it with random musical episodes of none musical shows?

Can't stand musicals. The only ones I've liked are Book of Mormon and Avenue Q. I did like the Scrubs one, and that one with Kimiko and Frenchie in The Boys. That was great!

SMG was sooo fit in Buffy.

Soooo fit.

Sorry what was this thread about again?
I don't know, her elbows were so pointy /s

But seriously the Buffy one worked for a few reasons. The cast had quite a few very talented people musically. Anthony Head and James Marsters have both released music and can sing and play guitar. Amber Benson has a great voice too. SMG turned out to be pretty damn good too. Michelle Trachtenberg although not a trained singer was a trained ballet dancer so they gave her a routine instead. Then of course they got a great guest who could dance and sing for the villain. The only person that didn't want to do to much was Alyson Hannigan and she mostly sung in group songs. The biggest surprise really is how little musical training Whedon had, he'd never written music before it I believe.

Then there are the other reasons the episode works, it has big plot significance in ongoing plot arcs. The music varies in style, tone which keeps things interesting too.

to be clear .. whilst I can't stand musicals I am not questioning the talent of some of them. Lucifer in particular a number of them have a cracking set of pipes on them and did do the songs justice.... it's just not what I want in my tv shows.

the singing in ST SNW however.... I dunno, maybe I am wrong but they sounded like they had been post processed a lot more and all just sounded "generic" no character at all

(but am far from an expert).

It’s probably because they are a lot of fun to make for the whole crew.

Many actors have done broad performance art training, I assume, including singing and dancing.
And the writers see it as a challenge and a change:)

As you say they're something the cast and crew can have fun with and often mark a milestone for the series, something like the 100th episode.

One of my favourite musical episodes was How I met your Mother, as it was the full on classic musical style.
But IIRC they also did a lot of other smaller musical bits as there were a couple of running jokes about one the characters backgrounds, and things like karaoke at their bar.
