What do most people think is more important on a graphics card for overall performance...

Memory or shaders/stream processors?

hard to say. very hard to say, iv seen cards with 512mb ram such as gf6200 which is not very quick at all compared to even a 128mb 6600.

then iv also seen cards with 320 stream processors perform slower than cards with 128 stream processors.

so this question can go either way.

very nice question though, would love to see the replies of other people since this is an interesting subject you have brought up.

Well my boss seems to think memory is everything.. Still haven't managed to convince him otherwise..

An X1950XT with 256MB RAM is slower to him than a 6200 with 512MB RAM..

One day I will win!

iv had many people say to me why thier 6200 with 512mb vram can;t run testdrive unlimited properly, they winge that they get around 20fps on low at 640x480 :p they they say why can;t it do it when its got 512mb on it and my 256mb card runs it far better.

very funny indeed. :p :D

Just show him benchmarks :) Toms Hardware has VGA charts that let you compare almost any card to almost any other card in many games and theoretical tests.

What about 'real world' experience? Anyone have cards with less memory that have performed better than previous cards with more memory?

its quite simple explanation really.

just explain to him that there are several components which make up a GFX card.

some of these are more important than others, and that while Vid Ram is important, it is and can be bottlenecked by memory bandwith, Shader power and general clockspeed.

anyone who thinks More Ram = Quicker = numpty.

talk to him in language he may understand.

Show him that a mondeo 2.0 has 136bhp, but a Honda Type R 2.0 has 190Bhp. explain to him that some numbers - whilst indicative of performance do not tell the whole story and that the actual spec should be looked at before making an assumption.

or a mitsubishi evo has 300bhp on a 2.0litre engine ;)

but try to beat Ariel Atom with an evo :D 220 BHP from 2.0 litre and almost 1/3rd the weight of Evo apart from that almost not a car :PP and almost makes a big diff

:D

You can't really compare "stream processors" or "shader processors" unless they are part of the same generation of GPUs and the same make (i.e. ATI or Nvidia).

On the other hand comparing the amount of memory is pretty simple so long as you take into account the speed at which it is running at.

Id allways fancy a 500,00 GB video card (bit over the top) but if it has a 12-bit ringbus lol (or somthing low) then it would be absolutely useless.
