What is my heating system

I have an electric boiler, it is very good and very neat, silent, perfect.

Big downside is that it chews power extremely heavily. Make sure that you are happy to shoulder this. The reason we went this route is because i didnt want to keep the oil boiler and massive garden tank as we are outside of a gas area.

We now plan to sell the house medium term so i think i will leave it, but if we were to stay longer term i think i would go to the hassle and expense of an air source system to supplement it. If i could get gas i'd definitely do that.

This what I don't get about green plans to replace all gas boilers. There doesnt seem to be a decent alternative as while electric can be extremely efficient it costs far too much.

Bit off topic but related to your post :p

Heat pumps, cut the electric costs by 33% worst cast and 75%+ best case. Ground source is better and more consistent then air source but more expensive to install.

The house is from 1972 and appears to have its original heating system (I assume original).

I was going to say it looks like 1970's vintage. Doubtful you'd find anyone who knows much about those outside of a museum.

Takes me back. we had one of those in our house in the 70's, made a whack tonne of noise when the fan cut in, had ducted hot air coming out vents in the floor. I remember the motor blew and I thought it was xmas as the gave me the old one to play with.

Ah yes my mothers house had one of those in her house. It was ripped out after she bought it as it wasn't very efficient and as you say made a hell of a racket when it came on.

They don't care about costs to the end user. It's all about the fictional CO2 saving as all that electricity will come from "green" sources. In reality, it won't for many years to come and natural gas is out major source of power in this country. Combined with the drive to push electric car sales, I'm really not sure where all this extra electricity is going to come from...

Is their room for a few ducts from your current heater cupboard from the loft? You could go for air source heat pump / heat recovery ventilation in the loft, duct down to the rooms as the current storage does, and just tap into the upstairs rooms through the ceiling. More future proof than gas and you get the bonus of energy efficient ventilation in the winter and cooling in the summer.

after seeing what is happening to the eleccy company's .. do you really want to go down that rabbit hole ?price could double if the caps allow it .. get gas a decent fitter could run the pipes thru the walls/skirting boards ..

That's one hell of a bump, i'd hope the OP is well and truly sorted by now!
