What is need for gaming?

i have always had i5 and tear 1 or 2 GPU, and always said that what needed for gaming. but after building my son a minecraft pc that i found out runs my games at high/max on a 1080 screen, i am finding it hard to complete my 2011 built.

sons rig right now
i3 4150 - H81M-PLUS - 8GB Vulcan - WindForce 280x - 120SSD
the thing cost less that an xbox and shows them up when gaming.

What would be the right hardware for a system the i would like to last 5 years as a main rig

I have no plans for 4k. I do have a 1440 27" benq so would like to power that, how ever in a year or so 1440 will be the new 1080 in that i think it will be the new standard.
I dont see a lot of ppl going 4k. My dad did as a tv and all he dose is moan about it been a waste of money, i am very happy with 1080tv
