What is 'normal' idle/light task RAM usage?

Hi all,

Quick question... Never really paid much attention to this, but I have 8GB RAM and at the moment I've just got Chrome and iTunes open, and I'm on 47% RAM usage

Is that correct/normal? Running Windows 8.1 if it makes any difference

Sorting the task manager memory usage list into order (largest first) and adding up to just over half way down the list I'm only at 700MB... So I don't understand where the rest of it is? Below this part of the list is all small values around 10MB or less, and considering I'm more than half way down the list there won't be enough that I haven't counted to make up for all the 'missing' RAM that is being used by something

I have 8GB (7.9GB) useable showing in my PC properties

Anyone have any ideas please? Or are there some hidden stuff using RAM that won't be shown in the 'processes' tab?

Thanks!

Wireless use, SSD memory apportioning, integrated graphics memory apportioning, anti-virus, etc... stuff like that can use close to 50% of 8GB, when combined. And it's not always the case that it's actually being used, it can just be set aside for specific use but will show up as "memory usage 47%".

Haven't got wireless

Integrated graphics is installed but not in use at the moment, cable is plugged in though so possibly like you say something has been put aside for it

Probably same for antivirus I guess

Hmm okay, seems like nothing I can do about it then :D Haha

Thanks

It's caching, Windows will cache your most used applications to RAM to help them open quicker, and if anything requires that RAM, then those cached (but not open and running) applications will be dumped from RAM to free up space.

So in theory just after the computer is booted (and finished loading what it has to load), the usage should be considerably less than 50%?

Or are these most used apps remembered by Windows and reloaded into ram every time you boot?

Windows will cache stuff on boot. The RAM usage is fine and nothing to worry about.

I have 32GB of RAM and it's sitting 30% full doing very little.
