I've heard people talking about "pencil modding" their graphics card to oveclock them. What is it, and how do you do it?

Sometimes you are able to shade in a resistor of a voltage controller circuit to reduce the resistance across it...this will result in a higher GPU voltage.

How you do it depends on the card you have. It should never be done without use of a DMM.

Basically it's physically modding your graphics card to make it quicker.

We used to have to overclock CPUs this way, before manufacturers started writing decent bios'.

ahhh them were the days ! None of this new fangled BIOS settings you young whippersnappers deal with today, you never know when you had it so easy !

When the Core 2 Duo was still a twinkle in somebodies eye.;)

I remember way way way way back. Overclocking when it first hit the mainstream.

Back then people didn't generally build their own PCs. The processor speed was defined by jumpers on the motherboard, and people found out you could just tell the motherboard the processor was faster than it actually was and there's yer dinner it was overclocked.

It turned out that most CPUs were capable of the fastest speed their architectural family was capable of, but in order to have a product spread across the price points they just branded some of them as lesser and sold them for less.

No ganged or unganged, no CPU tweak, no vcore adjustments, no custom BIOSs... :)

Gurusan,Didn't you pencil mod your HD4850? I have the same one fitted with a Neo Vortexx Cooler.
Any chance you could tell me how you did yours?

How do you push the clock speed up once you've raised the voltage though? CCC only allows up to 700MHz, and ATI tray tools just crashes my system when I try to use it.

Its there, under driver level settings.

Where it says system settings here...
